The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous bravery on the 9th May, 1915, near Rouges Bancs. As a stretcher bearer during the operations he exhibited the most indefatigable and courageous spirit in bringing in wounded men to the shelter of the fire trench, in many cases under heavy shell and machine-gun fire."
