The citation for his Military Cross published in the London Gazette reads: - "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a week of enemy attacks. During the whole time he set a splendid example of coolness and determination, and on one occasion when the enemy by sheer force of numbers penitrated the line of his company, they resisted to the last, saving a critical situation."
