Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in the London Gazette of 17 April 1918.

Wilkinson was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.

The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He has rendered excellent service during the past year, and his devotion to duty has been most meritorious. On several occasions he has afforded the men of his section a splendid example of endurance and self sacrifice."

Died of Wounds 17 September 1917. Wilkingson is buried in grave number XIX, row D, plot 12 of the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Poperinge, Belgium. He is recorded in the Cemetery Register as being the son of David and Mary Ellen Wilkinson, of 117, Healey Wood Road, Burnley, Lancashire. He was aged 23 at the time of his death.
