Woods was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.

The Burnley Express of 29 December 1917 reported, THRICE RECOMMENDED. Rosegrove Weaver Now Gets Medal. His many friends in Rosegrove district will be pleased to learn that Private Charles Sagar Woods, 34935, of the East Lancashire Regiment, whose home is at 15, Lever Street, has been awarded the Military Medal. He was decorated with the ribbon on December 14th, which ribbon he has since sent home to his wife. "The medal was awarded for holding the trenches under a very severe shell fire on November 20th 1917." This soldier had on two previous occasions been recommended for bravery. One of these was when, as a stretcher bearer, he attended a wounded comrade for eight hours whilst bullets were flying about, his companion having broken an arm and a leg. Private Woods is a stretcher bearer in the 2nd East Lancashire Regiment serving in France. He is 34 years of age and a native of Rosegrove. Previous to enlistment he was a weaver at Messrs. Walmsley's Peel Mill, Rosegrove, and was identified with St. Mark's Church and School, where he is on the roll of honour. He joined the colours in Burnley on June 18th 1916. Another brother Private W.H. Woods, is serving with the Labour Battalion.
