The citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal published in the London Gazette reads, "For gallant conduct on 4 November, 1914, during the attack on Tanga (East Africa), and for general good work performed under a heavy fire".
This is a rare East African award.
Died of disease in East Africa on the 9 December 1916 and is buried in the Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery, Tanzania.
The register records that he was 24 years of age and the son of Joseph and Rhoda Woodward of 224, Avenue Parade, Accrington, Lancashire.
On enlistment he lived at 21, Calder Street, Nelson.
