The Burnley Express of 19 August 1916 reported, Sergeant George Young, of the North Staffordshire Regiment who lived at 56, Bradshaw Street, Nelson, has died from his wounds. He was initially reported as being dangerously wounded but his death is now reported by a hospital nurse. Sergeant Young was 39 years of age and had served throughout the South African War with the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. He was a time expired man but joined the North Staffordshire Regiment at the outbreak of war. He was formerly a stoker at Nelson Gas Works.
The Burnley Express of 18 November 1916 reported, ANOTHER NELSON POSTUMOUS HONOUR. For Sergeant G. H. Young, North Staffordshire Regiment, who formerly lived at 56, Bradshaw Street, Nelson, and who died of wounds in August last, there is a postumous honour, the War Office having awarded a Military Medal for bravely leading a bombing party and holding a German trench they had just captured.
