140469 Pte. Arthur Edmondson, Machine Gun Corps. Born in Burnley, Lancashire in 1891, Arthur was living in Cowling, Yorkshire at the time of his enlistment. Enlisting in Brierfield on May 30th 1915, he was sent to France on active service in October of that year, serving on the Western Front throughout. Severely gassed on 9th April 1918, Arthur was sent to various military hospitals in the UK for treatment. Whilst at the Military Hospital at Alnwick, Northumberland, Arthur contracted influenza in November 1918 which deteriorated into septic pneumonia. Dying from this on 16th November 1918, Arthur’s body was returned to Cowling where, following a funeral conducted with full military honours including a firing party sent from Bradford, he was buried in the churchyard of the parish church of Holy Trinity.
