Married In May. Burnley Workhouse Porter Killed (Burnley Express on November 7th and 14th 1914)

An official communication was sent to his wife on Thursday that Private W. Fox, the workhouse porter and a reservist from the King’s Royal Lancaster Regiment was killed in action on October 13th. The blow in this case is all the heavier because it was only in May that the deceased soldier married Miss Gant, a nurse in the mental ward at the Workhouse, upon receiving the appointment of porter. They had only been married ten weeks when he was called up for service.

Deceased, who was 28 years of age was a native of Salford. While with the colours he spent several years in India. Returning from India just over 2 years ago he was appointed Infirmary porter at Burnley. His bright and genial character made him a great favourite with all the other officers of the Institution.”
