JUNIOR FOOTBALL OFFICIAL
Burnley Youth Leaves Baby Two Weeks Old (Burnley Express 7th October 1916)

A very sad case indeed of a soldier’s death is that of Private John Henry, of the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment (formerly of the Burnley Territorials) and whose family reside at 56 Pritchard Street. He enlisted at the beginning of the year, when he was also married and he leaves a young widow with a baby a fortnight old. He died in Whalley Hospital on Tuesday evening from the effects of his wounds, and his baby was too young to be taken for him to see although only a few miles away. The circumstances are indeed pathetic.

Private John Henry Hargreaves who was 22 years of age, first joined a reserve Territorial battalion and was transferred to a machine gun section of the L.N.L going out about two months ago. He had not been at the front long before he was wounded in the spine and leg on September 9th. A fortnight ago on Thursday he was brought to St Mary’s Hospital, Whalley, but the spinal injury was a serious one, and the paralysis supervening his death took place on Tuesday. His body has been brought home and the funeral will take place to-day at the Burnley Cemetery.

He was a well known young man. A keen footballer, he was one of the secretaries of the Burnley and District Junior Football League. He was an old Piccadilly Road schoolboy and previous to enlisting he was a weaver at Foster’s Mill, Wood Top.
