Tom Holden was born in Burnley . He enlisted at Canning Town, Essex as Private 18090 in the 13th Battalion, of the Essex Regiment. His family lived on Rectory Road and he was resident in Poplar Middlesex. He was killed in action on Saturday 29th July 1916 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 10 D.

The Burnley Express of 30th August 1916 reported that;-
“Burnley Doctor’s Brother. Son of Former Dentist.


News has been received of the death in action, on July 29th of Pte. Tom Holden of the Machine Gun Section of the 13thEssex regiment who leaves a wife and five children. He is a son of the late Mr. Thos. Holden, Dentist of St James Row, and he is a brother of Dr. H. Holden of Rectory Road, Burnley. The deceased soldier was 34 years of age, and joined the army shortly after the war broke out.”

The Burnley News added:-

“Pte Holden joined the Army a month after war was declared, and was in the machine gun section of the 13th Essex Regiment”.
