Gunner John Richard Morris Formerly
a member of St Matthew's Choir I am sorry to have to inform you of the death in action of your son, who was killed on August 21st, but he was spared all suffering, death being instantaneous. I can tell you that he was a lad who will be very much missed. He was a lad who led a clean, God-fearing life. I have never seen him do a wrong action while I have known him. He did not know what fear was, and he placed himself in the in the hands of God, no matter where he was. We buried him on the 23rd a few miles behind the firing line. A few of the boys attended the funeral and the bugler sounded the Last Post over the grave. The boys cannot speak too highly of your son.
