Burnleys Great War Centenary Sponsored by: David Thompson

His picture is supposed to be in one of the books of the ‘Barnsley Pals’. Captioned ‘Big Sammy Nixon goes over the top’.
I knew his brother and sister. They were not big. They must have meant hearted.
He married a Barnsley lass and had a family in Barnsley. They separated and divorced at the outbreak of the War. He joined the pals but put his address as his sisters in Burnley.
He was wounded and came back to convalesce in Burnley. When he went back he told Grandma that she wouldn’t see him again. In 1917 she was in the scullery when someone came in the front door. She looked round and it was Sammy. She wiped her hands and turned to welcome him, but he wasn’t there. The Telegram arrived shortly after.
