Born in Blackburn (though he spent most of his early life in Preston, which is listed as his place of birth on SDGW), in 1894, he was the son of Thomas and Bridget Skelly and had an elder brother (Frederick) and younger sister (Annie). In about 1905, the family moved to the Pickup Croft (Pickup Court) area of Burnley, Lancashire and in about 1912, after working in Manchester, Thomas enlisted in the Army. Tom's address at the time of enlistment was 7, Hill Top. An unmarried man, his NoK was his mother.
