News has been received this weekend of the death of Private James Tattersall,
of Briercliffe Road, who was in the East Lancashire Regiment. The deceased
young man, who was only 19 years of age, joined the regiment a few months
before the outbreak of the war.
The following is a copy of a letter sent from Company Sergeant Major J.
Dawson, of “C” Company, East Lancashire Regiment, acquainting
Miss Holden, one of the late Private Tattersall’s friends, of the
manner of his death:-
Belgium 3/2/15.
“With reference to your letter dated January 27th, 1915. I regret
to inform you that Private Jim Tattersall was killed in action on that
date. Will you please convey to his parents the deepest sympathy of the
men of the ‘C’ Company, and inform them that he died like
a soldier. He was shot whilst at work in the trenches, the bullet entering
the right side of his body and coming out on the left. He died whilst
I was putting a bandage on him, and he went very quietly and without pain.
Please forgive me for recalling your letter, but as I take it as a duty
to write to the relations of the men I lose, I know you will not be offended
at the liberty I have taken, Again tendering to you and his parents our
sympathy to losing such a good soldier, I am, yours faithfully, J. Dawson,
C.S.M.”
Previous to joining the forces Private Tattersall worked as a weaver at
Harle Syke.
