ONLY SON
(Burnley Express 16/12/16)
Mr & Mrs Whitaker of 22 Bulcock Street, Burnley Lane, have received
the distressing news that their only son, Private Arthur Whitaker, 33657,
of the Lancashire Fusiliers was killed in action on November 23rd. It
was during his first visit to the trenches. They had previously been indirectly
informed, through a Harle Syke soldier’s letter to a friend that
their son was missing.
Private Whitaker, who was exceedingly well known in the Briercliffe Road
and Harle Syke district, he was 21 years of age. He enlisted in May 31st
last (1915) and was drafted out three months ago. He had been a weaver
formerly at Messrs Whitehead and Leavers Mill, and siso at Harle Syke,
but left weaving to work on the farm known as Haning’s Temrimetric.
He was connected with the Elim Primitive Methodist Church. And School.
