Letter to Willie’s mother

It is with very deep regret that I have to inform you that your son, of my company was killed in action on the morning of the 8th. He was stationed in the front trench at the time, and the enemy attempted to raid our line. It was during that raid that your son was killed. It will be some slight alleviation of your sorrow to know that your son did not suffer any pain. He turned to the man next to him and said ‘I’m done for’ and died before he was laid down in the bottom of the trench. Private Windle had been in my company a long time and had always been a willing worker and a good soldier, and it is with deep regret that I had found he had been hit. He will be buried well behind the fighting area.

Captain G N T Taylor
