Private James Calvert, who was a despatch rider in the 9th Scottish Rifles, was killed in action in France on July 14th 1915. In a letter to his widow (who resided at 272 Chapel House Road, Nelson) Sergt.-Major Cumming, of the same regiment as the deceased soldier, wrote :- " As one who was closely in touch with all he did, I can give you only the bitter yet glorious consolation that he died like a soldier and a man. His death is greatly regretted by all " Pte. Calvert, who was 20 years of age, enlisted in October 1914, and went to the Front on May 12th, 1915. He was formerly employed as a weaver by Messrs. Riddick, Stuttard and Company , Clover Hill Mill, Nelson, and since October 21st. , 1911 he has been one of the collectors of the Nelson and District Weavers Asssociation. He leaves a widow and two children.
