Dyson enlisted in the “Accrington and Burnley Howitzers” in Burnley on the 8th March 1915, aged 26 years and 9 months and gave his trade as a cotton weaver. He had married his wife Ada (nee Rushforth) at Elim Chapel on the 28th January 1911 and had a daughter named Mary who was born on the 23rd July 1911.Previously he had served for 6 months in the East Lancashire Regiment- Special Reserve but had been discharged for being under age.
He was sent to France on the 1st February 1916 and served there continuously until July 1919, with the exception of two weeks furlough in September 1918. During his service in France he suffered gunshot wounds to the right thigh and right arm on the 2nd August 1917, these wounds being described as slight.

Dyson was finally discharged on the 31st March 1920 having served 5 years and 23 days
