Another member of the Burnley Lads' Club to distinguish himself in the war is Signaller Harold Bell, 11th East Lancashire Regiment, whose home is at 87, Albert Street, Burnley. He has written to his mother saying that he has been awarded the Military Medal "for repairing phone wires whilst fully exposed to heavy shell-fire." Signaller Bell was formerly employed as a weaver by the Hollingreave Manufacturing Company, of Ashfield Road, and enlisted into the "Pals" Battalion in September 1914. He was first sent to Egypt, and afterwards to France, where he has been serving in the thick of the fighting for nearly three years. Twelve months ago he was gassed, and in hospital for two months. He is 22 years of age. A brother, Driver Reuben Bell (23), joined the R.F.A., in January 1915, and is also serving in France.
