Enlisted on the 3 September 1914 into the East Lancashire Regiment. To France on the 8 July 1915 with the 7th battalion. At some point transferred into the Royal Engineers and was with 183 Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers when he won his MM (London Gazette 16 November 1917). Discharged on the 24 May 1918 due to sickness. He was born circa 1885. He was living at 14, Hill Top Street, Burnley in 1921, a miner at Bank Hall Pit, aged 35.
