Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in the London Gazette of 18 July 1917.

Connell was a native of Preston, Lancashire, living in Nelson, Lancashire at the outbreak of war.

The battalion War Diary states the Distinguished Conduct Medal was awarded for operations from the 9th - 18th April 1917.

The citation in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He took command of the remainder of his platoon and carried on with the consolidation. His fine example under heavy fire was of the greatest value at a critical time."

John Connell died at Nelson, Lancashire on the 8 January 1946 and was buried in the Roman Catholic section of Nelson Cemetery. A short obituary appears in the Nelson Leader of Friday, 18 January 1946. He was survived by his wife Jenny and daughters Kathleen and Minnie.
