John a 17 year old weaver from Burnley first joined the 3rd East Lancashire Regiment in 1899 later joining the 1st Battalion in 1902 serving in India for almost 2 years.WW1 service was from 22/8/1914 his
service is littered with AWL's and Desertion.He served with the EL for over 13 years,later re-enlisting with The Ox and Bucks Light Infantry in 1917, discharged 1919.
