Lived in Rochdale until his death in 1956

His working life was spent with the Municipal Transport department, rising from tramway clerk before the first world war to chief clerk by the start of the second world war.

He enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps (Territorial Force) in August 1915 and was assigned to the 60th (London) Division Sanitary Section. He went to France in June 1916; to Salonica in December 1916; to Egypt in July 1917 and finally returned to the UK in August 1919.
