9397 A/SGT J. HUGHES Liverpool Regiment.

John Hughes was born in Liverpool, Lancashire around 1880. He enlisted into the 4th battalion of the King's Liverpool Regiment in 1909 aged 18 giving his trade as a "file cutter".He served as a Territorial solder with the K.L.R. from 1909 and was mobilized for active war service on the 8th August 1914.

He was discharged from the K.L.R. in 1915 and immediately re enlisted into Royal Engineers as number 137688 with 185 Tunnelling Company his service papers stating that his trade was a "Miner" He served from 1915 until April 1918 when he transferred to number 170 Tunnelling company R.E. until the end of WW1.

Although John was born in Liverpool he lived the majority of his life in Burnley as it was his wife's (Ethel) home town.
