Gazette 17th December 1917 Born at Burnley circa 1885, he enlisted into the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment on the 18 July 1902 (#8393). He was living at that time at Liverpool, Lancashire and employed as a labourer for a coal merchant. He served with them until he joined the Regular Army, (Royal Field Artillery) on the 28 August 1902. On enlistment he gave his next of kin as his father Richard of 30, Reed Street, Burnley, Lancashire. On the 1911 census he is a serving soldier with 103rd Battery, Royal Field Artillery at Woolwich, Kent. During World War 1 he served in France and Belgium from the 6 October 1914 to 1917, Italy 1917 & 1918, and Northern Europe 1919. He was entitled to the 1914 Star and bar, British War and Victory Medals in addition to his Military Medal. On the 1921 census he is still serving in the Royal Artillery (#1030474). He was discharged on the 29 August 1923. He died at Woolwich, Kent in 1936.
