John James Lingard BURNLEY SOLDIERS ITALIAN HONOUR. Sergeant J. J. Lingard, of the 48th Division, Army Service Corps, Italian Expeditionary Force, has been awarded the Italian Croix de Guerre. His wife and child live at 9, Tentre Street, Burnley. He has sent letters to his mother and his wife informing them that he has been decorated with the honour. Writing to his wife he says, "I have won the Italian Medal, they call it the Italian Croix de Guerre. It can only be won on the field. I got it for getting the section through with the rations. I have the medal, it is a cross, and the ribbon is blue with two white stripes in it." Sergeant Lingard was in the Regular Army when war broke out, having served nine years. He went out to France immediately on the outbreak of war, and remained there until twelve months last November, when he was drafted to Italy.
