Born February 1899 in Burnley, Lancashire. A jam boiler by trade, he was recorded in the 1911 Census living at Rose Grove, Burnley. He joined the Royal Navy in February 1917, aged 18. He served exclusively on HMS Cornwall (1902) Monmouth Class Armoured Cruiser, which served in the Dardanelles, China Station and from 1917 onwards North America Station on convoy duties. He was demobilized in February 1919. The 1939 Register had Ivie Mackie living in Eccles with his wife Alice, still in the jam business.
