Enlisted on the 8 September 1914 aged 30, a collier of 57, Clough Street, Burnley. He served in the 7th battalion until wounded on the 7 July 1916 (shrapnel wound to left hand). On recovery was sent to the Cheshire Regiment, number 63391 and served in the 13th battalion until again wounded on the 6 September 1917 (gun shot wound to right foot). On recovery went to the 10th battalion and as again wounded on the 14 April 1918 (gun shot wound to left arm). Was discharged unfit for further service from the Lord Derby War Hospital, Warrington on the 11 November 1918.

With the group is a Association of Conservative Clubs "Distinguished Service" Medal for 1935 with 4 additional 5 year service bars.

Also entitled to the Silver War Badge number B41224. He was actually born on the 8 October 1886 so his age was wrong on his enlistment papers. There were two more children born after his discharge, Irene 1920 and Lilly 1922. He died at Burnley in 1959.

His papers show he was married at the Holy Trinity Church, Burnley on the 21 December 1907 to Margaret Ellen Bannister; they had four children at the time of his discharge; Robert 1909; Smith 1911; George 1914 and John Alfred born 1917.
