He joined the Coldstream
Guards in 1903 at the age of 19, having previously been in the 2nd Dragoon
Guards (this is given in his enlistment record which I obtained from the
Guards' archivist). He was discharged
after only a year on medical grounds (cataracts of the eyes (which he
finally had removed about 1950!).
In 1914 he joined the RE and served in France until 1919. At the time
of his discharge he was with RE 104 Coy. Chinese labour. His pay book
gave his rank on discharge in 1919 as sergeant, rather than corporal (although
my late mother thought that he had been a corporal). After the war he
worked as a flour carter then for the Highways Dept. of Burnley Corporation.
He Died in 1960.
