Awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in the London Gazette of 3 June 1919.

Company Sergeant Major Walter Whittam; WO372/21 - Medal Index Card shows; 166 C/Sergeant Walter Whitham, East Lancashire Regiment, later 243873 WO Class 2 Walter Whitham, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War and Victory Medals and notes that he was disembodied in 1919. WO372/24; Medal Index Card shows; 166 C/Sergeant W. Witham (sic) was awarded the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal (GV) in Army Order 216 dated 1 July 1914. Walter Whittam served initially in the 1/5th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment and sailed with them in September 1914 for Egypt. On 9 May 1915 he landed with the battalion in Gallipoli and fought there until he was evacuated suffering with dysentery (see Burnley Express of 27 October 1915). On recovery he continued to serve but now with the 1/5th Battalion, Loyal (North Lancashire) Regiment with whom he won the Meritorious Service Medal. On the 1 March 1920 Walter Whitham re-enlisted into the 5th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment (#3377184) and continued to serve until his discharge on the 16 February 1922 shortly before the battalion was renumbered 4th/5th on amalgamation of the two battalions. His conduct is noted as "good" and his address shown as 109, Sandygate, Burnley, Lancashire.
