Details of these awards have been taken from the following sources, The Supplements to the London Gazette, Burnley Express, Burnley News, Colne Times and the Nelson Leader. Further research has been made in the relevant regimental and unit histories.

The vast majority of this research project is based on original hand written notes by Mr. Alan Mackay of Burnley, Lancashire compiled during the 1970's and 1980's.

Special thanks are due to Steve Bury of Colne, Andrew Gill and Andrew Mackay of Burnley and Stephen Owen of Rishton along with the many descendants of the recipients of these awards who contact me on a regular basis with additional information and family photographs.
