George Smith FIELDING.
HMS Neptune, Royal Navy. Killed in action on the 19 December 1941. Aged 21, he was the son of Benjamin and Edith M. Fielding and was lost at sea on 19th December 1941 when HMS Neptune was sunk. The Burnley Express of 3 January 1942 reported that: - Mr and Mrs B. Fielding of 19 Red Lees Avenue Cliviger, on Monday received notification that their younger son, Leading Telegraphist George Smith Fielding was missing. Only last week he cabled Christmas greetings to his parents who last saw him in March. Aged 21, Leading Telegraphist Smith attended St Peter's Day and Sunday Schools. Afterwards being employed by Messrs Chew's fruiterers and florists. Four years ago he achieved his ambition of joining the Navy and since war broke out has taken part in many operations, including the bombardment of Bardia. His elder brother Ronald is a sergeant observer in R.A.F. and has taken part in many raids on Germany. Commemorated on the Plymouth Memorial.
