Aged 19, he was the son of John and Maggie Sherburn of 35, Rosewood Avenue, Burnley, Lancashire.

The Burnley Express of 5 January 1945 reported: -

Airman Missing

As announced in Wednesday's "Burnley Express" Flight Engineer Sergeant John Geoffrey Sherburn (19) whose mother resides at 35 Rosewood Avenue, Burnley, is reported missing. A Burnley Grammar School old boy he joined the R.A.F. about 15 months ago and gained his wings in eight months. He was formerly an apprentice draughtsman and attended engineering classes at Burnley Municipal College.

Buried at Rheinburg War Cemetery, Germany.
