John SILVERWOOD.
Royal Marine Auxiliary HMS Galatea, Royal Navy. He was lost at sea following the sinking of HMS Galatea
on 15 December 1941. Aged 20, the son of John & Hannah Silverwood, of 23, Redvers Street, Burnley, Lancashire. The Burnley Express of 3 January 1942. reported: - Presumed Killed "Missing presumed killed" is the official message received on Monday by Mrs Silverwood of 23 Redvers Street , Burnley concerning her 20 year old son John, an engine room artificer in the Royal Navy which he joined as a volunteer a little over 12 months ago. The last letter his mother received was on Christmas Eve, and at the time of writing he was then at sea with his ship. As a boy he attended St Andrew's School, and from leaving there to joining the Navy he was employed at Burnley paper works. He attended St Peter's Church. A younger brother R. Silverwood, with C. Waterworth was shown in a photograph which appreared in the "Express" a week ago of a six foot model battleship which they and their classmates at Abel Street Senior School have made for an exhibition during Burnley and district's £700,000 Warship Week. The father Mr John Silverwood, served in the Army throughout the last war. Commemorated on the Plymouth Memorial. |
