The Burnley Express of 17 January 1945 p2 reported that:

Awarded D.S.M.

L./S. Harry Kay 24-years-old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Kay, of 45, Hurtley Street, Burnley (formerly of 137, Healey Wood Road), has been awarded the D.S.M. for courage, skill and devotion to duty, shown in an action which resulted in the sinking of an enemy submarine.
L./S. Kay, who joined the R.N. five years ago, has seen service in South Africa, Canada, Newfoundland and Gibraltar, and has taken part in convoy work in the Mediterranean.
Previously he was employed as a clerk by the Co-operative Dairy Society. His brother, William, won the M.M. in the last war.
