Official intimation was received this week of the death in action of Pte. Ernest Barlow, 2nd Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, whose parents reside at 82, Yorkshire Street, Burnley. The deceased, who was well known and respected in the town, was in the reserve when war broke out, being at the same time engaged as a porter at Bank Top Station. He immediately rejoined his regiment, and was among the first detachment to go to France. He was in the retreat from Mons, and had since been in much of the severe fighting which has taken place in France. The news of his death will occasion regret to all who knew him. Pte. Barlow joined the army when only a youth, and altogether had 14 years service. He was in India for several years, afterwards went to South Africa and Malta. He was a single man.
