James Booth Killed during the attack on Polygon Wood 26th September - 3rd October 1917 which claimed the lives of over 1500 British soldiers 12 men from the 8th Kings own were killed on the 29th September including Pte Gilbert Baldwin, also from Burnley "Killed after thirty month's service. Mr and Mrs Booth of 325 Briercliffe Road, during the week end had the misfortune to receive official intimation that their son, Private James Booth, 241913, of the King's Own Royal Lancasters, had been killed in action on Sept. 26. The deceased soldier, who enlisted on March 3rd, 1915, was 30 years of age. After training at Salisbury and Oswestry, he was drafted abroad about two years ago, and saw much service. He was slightly wounded in one battle, receiving a bayonet thrust in the shoulder, though he had a narrow escape, and was invalided home for sickness for a period. After being in Nottingham Hospital, he rejoined his regiment last February. Previous to joining the Army the deceased was employed at the pit top at Bank Hall, and then went to work on munitions. Brought up at Myrtle Bank, he was of a very quiet, retiring disposition, and took no part in outdoor games. Several more or less distant relatives are in the service of the country."
