LEAVES SIX CHILDREN
BURNLEY PIT LABOURER KILLED
(Burnley Express & Advertiser 30th June1917)

Official news was received on Saturday at her home, 23 Ashworth-street, Burnley, by Mrs. Brierley, of the death in action in France of her husband, Pte (18439) Levi Brierley of the 2nd Lancashire Fusiliers. Pte. Brierley, who would have been 31 years old next week, formerly worked at Bank Hall as a jinney-tenter and drawer and when war broke out became an archer’s labourer at Towneley Pit. In March last he enlisted with a number of his workmates, and after only four months training was drafted out to France, where he had been on active service right up to his death. On February 16th Pte. Brierley wrote that he was again going into the trenches, and the official communication gives his death as having occurred the day after. In a previous letter the soldier had stated that he had made a compact with his colleagues that whoever fell should notify the other’s relatives. As no letter has come it is surmised that the others were put out of action at the same time. The saddest feature is that the soldier leaves a widow and six young children.
