Colne and Nelson Times - 28th July 1916

Official news has been received that Private James Broughton, of the 7th Battalion, East Lancashire, has been killed in action on July 5th. The deceased soldier enlisted in the East Lancashire Regiment soon after war broke out, and had been at the Front for a long time.

In his last letter home he said they were just out of the trenches for a brief spell.

"I think I have seen the worst side of this war," he added. "Anybody that could live last winter in the trenches can live in anything. I'm afraid I shall not get a pass for the Burnley holidays."

Before enlisting he worked as a weaver at Messrs. Proctor Brothers, Spring Mills. His brother Thomas is also on active service, being a member of the Burnley Territorials, and went through the Dardanelles fighting.
