Hapton Hero Killed ( Burnley News )

A Gallant Officer and Capable Leader

The flag at the Hayton Church of England school was hoisted half-mast on the sad news arriving this week that Second-Lieut. Norman Clayton had been killed in action at Longueval. Joining the Berkshire Territorials soon after the outbreak of the war the late Second Lieutenant Clayton, very soon obtained promotion, and on December 16th, 1915, was promoted from Lance Corporal to Second Lieutenant for acts of gallantry, and the exercise of powers of the highest kind. He was educated at Hapton Church of England School, under the supervision of his father who is now retired at Poulton. After a course at Accrington Secondary School he entered the Manchester University, and he graduated B.A. He afterwards accepted a position as assistant master in the Grammar School at Dollar (Scotland). It was residing at Dollar that he was selected to play with Clackmannan County at cricket. He next moved to Ludlow in Shropshire and afterwards to Hutton, near Preston, where he gave up his situation to join the army.
