Burnley Mother’s Sad News

Mrs. Cummings, who up to eight years ago resided in Colne, and now resides at 16, Kirkgate, Burnley, has as we stated in the “Express” last Saturday, received official news that her son, Pte. (4633) Edward Cummings, of the Machine Gun Corps., was killed in action on October 1st. Pte. Cummings, who would have been 19 years old last Saturday, worked at Smith’s tanyard, Colne. He had been in the Army twenty months, twelve of which were spent on active service. Two months ago he was slightly wounded, and was back again in the firing line a month later, the letter informing her of this fact being the last Mrs. Cummings received from her son. His brother Pte Thomas Cummings, of the King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, who had been in the Army over 14 months, was badly wounded in France six months ago, and has only recently returned to the regiment at the depot. He is aged 21 years. Mrs. Cummings has three other children.
