Rifleman
Arthur Dodgeon A Habergham Chemistry Student (Burnley Express - 1st November 1916) Habergham readers will regret to learn of the death in action of Rifleman Arthur Dodgeon, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Dodgeon, of 776, Padiham Road, Habergham. This young soldier, 23 years of age, was with the 12th City of London Regiment, (4529). He had mapped out for himself a career in the world of chemistry, and was a young man of fine promise. He received his early education at Habergham Council School, under Messrs. W. B. Hill and G. Beetham respectively. Afterwards he was apprenticed with Mr. Bracewell, chemist, late of Hargreaves Street, Burnley, and finally became assistant Chemist with a Mr. Dunlop in London. When he answered the call of his country on December 4th, 1915 he was dispensing at Norwood Cottage Hospital, London, and also assisting in a temporary hospital specially for wounded soldiers. He was also preparing for his final examination when he went into military training at Richmond and Salisbury Plain. Previous to going South he was a Sunday school scholar at the Padiham Unitarian School.
