Burnley News - September 23rd 1916 Died Fighting Gallantly Burnley Company Sergt.-Major

Mrs. Dutton, who resides with her mother at 66, Plumbe Street, Burnley, has received word from the War Office that her husband Company Sergt.-Major Dutton, was killed in action on August 3rd. His death was instantaneous. In the course of a letter to Mrs. Dutton, Company Quarter-Master-Sergt. S. J. Dixon says:-

“He died fighting a gallant fight, and had the admiration of the whole company. We all express our deepest sympathy with you and your children.”

When war was declared Company Sergt.-Major Dutton was serving in India and was immediately drafted to England. He was 32 years of age and had been in the Army twelve years eight of which had been spent abroad. He leaves a widow and two children. His brother-in-law, Pte. John W. Riley, of Nairne Street, Burnley returned home in June last, after nearly two years’ experience as a prisoner of war in Germany.
