Burnley Lance-Corporal Killed
Lance-corporal William Edward Foster was killed in action on July 7th. Official intimation has been received to this effect by his sister, Mrs. Haken, 12, Spencer Street, Burnley lane. He enlisted in the Manchester “Pals” almost two years ago. By February 14th 1914, he had completed six years service in the local Territorial Artillery. Lance-Corporal Foster had been in the habit of writing regularly to his sister, but the letter ceased at Burnley Fair. On the following Monday a comrade wrote that he had been wounded, but was doing well. Mrs. Haken inquired further about him, but nothing further was heard until the official intimation of his death was received. He had a week’s furlough at Easter. Lance-Corporal Foster was 26 years of age, and was formerly employed at Barden Pit.
