Now Presumed Dead

Pte Harry Goodier, 4th Batt. Grenadier Guards, a soldier who promised a fine physique, standing 6ft. 3ins. In height and who had been missing since an engagement on September 25th, 1916, is now officially presumed dead. He was a single man, 22 years of age, and when the war broke out he was in America, but at once returned to this country, working his passage on a cattle steamer. He enlisted in January, 1915. He received his training in the South of England, and for a time was on guard at Buckingham Palace. In October of the same year he was drafted to France, where he took part in many severe battles. Previous to going to America he resided with his mother who lives at 60, Hartley Street, Burnley, and was a weaver at Messrs Spencer’s Queen’s Mill. He was identified with St John’s Roman Catholic Church, Burnley, where he was on the roll of honour. The deceased soldier has three brothers serving whilst Pte Tom Jacques, of the King’s Own Royal Lancasters (whose death we announced in Wednesday’s issue) was his brother in law.
