SOLDIER DIES IN HOSPITAL FUNERAL AT WHEATLEY LANE

The death took place at St. Gabriel’s Hospital, Camberwell, London on Saturday, of Private William Hardy (32), of the Duke of Wellington Regiment, whose home was at 7 Cronshaw Street, Burnley. He had been in France since the commencement of the war, and was fortunate enough not to have been wounded in February, however, he contracted inflammation, and after being in a French hospital was bought over to England on March 25th. He had been connected with the Army since he was 17 years of age. His remains were brought over to Burnley on Wednesday, and the interment took place at Wheatley Lane on Thursday.
The funeral was attended by a contingent of the 2nd Reserve Battalion 5th East Lancashire Regiment, six of whom acted as bearers. The Last Post was sounded at the graveside, and a firing party of twelve men, under Sergeant Fitzgerald fired the final salute.
Deceased’s brother, Robert, is a gunner in the West Kent Regiment at the front. Nothing has been heard of him for nearly three months. Besides her two sons, Mrs Hardy has had a son-in-law and nine nephews engaged in the war.
