Shell in the Trench
Burnley Private Killed While at Tea
Mr. and
Mrs. Alexander NcNab, of 25, Wynotham Street, Briercliffe Road, Burnley,
have had the sad news conveyed to them by a comrade that their son Pte.
Andrew McNab, of the East Lancashire Regiment, was killed on November
7th. His friend writes:
“I am very sorry to have to break the news of your son Andrew’s
death. On the 7th of November Andrew and I were having tea together, when
a shell dropped straight into the trench, hitting your son just above
the heart. He shouted for me to bandage him up. He then lost consciousness.
I did my best for him, but it was hopeless. All the bearers send their
deepest sympathy, also all the men of the regiment. He was very well liked,
and was always talking of home to me.”
Pte. Andrew McNab who was 22 last April, was in the Special Reserve when
the war broke out and was up for his annual training. He went out soon
after, and had been out ever since, his last home furlough being twelve
months last April, when he was suffering from frostbite. In April this
year he was made a stretcher bearer and was mentioned in the battalion
orders along with others “for gallant behaviour and presence of
mind under very trying circumstances” on April 5th 1916 while “D”
Company was being heavily bombarded with aerial torpedoes. About this
time he was wounded in the right arm. Before leaving Burnley Pte. McNab
worked as a weaver at the Frazer Street Manufacturing Co.’s Mill.
He attended the Swedenborgian Church, in Briercliffe Road. Mr. and Mrs.
McNab have three other sons at the front Alexander (Royal Engineers),
in France and William and John (East Lancashires) in Egypt. They have
also twin boys now 18 years old who expect to be called up shortly. In
addition Mr. and Mrs. McNab have a son in law at the front.
His brother Alexander McNab served in the Royal Engineers.
His brother William McNab also served in the East Lancashire Regiment.
His brother John McNab also served in the East Lancashire Regiment.
