24682 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers
Killed in Action 27th August 1916, aged 18
Born in Burnley
Enlisted in Farnworth
Lived at 1-15 Alpine Terrace, Kearsley
Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France
The role of the
1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers on the 27th August, 1916 was to attack eastwards,
with its left on the east corner of Deville Wood, and capture Pint Trench
and the north of Ginchy. The principal objection to the attack was that
a flank had to be secured and formed along Ale Alley simultaneously with
the attack on Pint Trench and Ginchy. Ale Trench ran along the crest of
the ridge and commanded the gentle slope of the south as far as Guillemont
and could not be touched by the artillery where it passed close to the
wood owing to the height of the trees.
The attack began at 5am with a bombardment of artillery and rifle grenades,
at 6:15am the attack was held up owing to the lack of rifle grenades.
More grenades were sent up, and orders to push the attack to the north.
This was done. The bombers pushed forward under a heavy fire from our
artillery and rifle grenades, and drove the enemy back. They finally established
a block* within 30 yards of the west end of Ale Alley, thus practically
clearing the enemy out Deville Wood. In the meantime we pushed 100 yards
along Beer Trench, towards Ale Alley farther east. Casualties were heavy
but Deville Wood was completely in British hands.
*A block is a strong gate put in the trench.
