Dragoons Death
(Burnley
Express 5th July 1915)
Official news reached Burnley on Tuesday that Trooper Christopher
Peacock of the 3rd Dragoons had died on June 24th from wounds received
in action in France. The deceased soldier, who was 24 years of age was
the youngest son of Mr. Michael Peacock of Hunslet-street, and formerly
worked for the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway. He was a member of the
East Lancashire Special Reserve, but eventually desired to become a regular
soldier and entered the 3rd Dragoons which he was in about 5 years. He
intended to do 21 years’ service.
Before leaving the Special Reserve he had risen
to the rank of corporal. After the outbreak of war he was transferred
to the 3rd Dragoons and later was attached to the 2nd Life Guards, with
which regiment he was wounded. His relatives had a postcard from him saying
that he was wounded on June 13th and he was then in good hands. Later
the War Office sent out a notification that he was slightly wounded, but
on Tuesday news came that he had succumbed to his wounds. His eldest brother
lives at 11 Tarleton-street, and his second brother is Pte. Wm. Peacock
of the transport section of the 8th East Lancashire Regiment. His three
sisters live at 22 Hunslet-street. The last time he was in Burnley was
when he came to his father’s funeral
