I
am currently researching into Henry Rigg (who was known as Harry) as part
of a group called Wilmslow Community Archaeology. The reason for this
is that he is mentioned on the war memorial at Wilmslow and appears to
have lived in Wilmslow, Cheshire for a while. The census return from 1911
shows his father as a gents outfitter, and his mother - who it also says
was Rochdale born – is down as a ladies outfitter, whilst Harry
is classed as “Commercial traveller”, with the additional
citation of “clothing” added to the end of this. A newspaper
cut out that I obtained from Ancestry, states that a gents outfitter was
the business that he was assisting his father in when war broke out, and
that this business was on a St James Street. This - I presume - is a Burnley
paper, as no mention is made of him in the Wilmslow papers. The St James
Street I presume, is also in Burnley; as I understand that, to this day,
the street is still a major shopping place in Burnley.
Numerous photos and a letter are also on Ancestry, whilst a school report
says that he went to Wilmslow Independent British School, but the newspaper
article mentions Nantwich Grammar School.
